History of Gibraltar

The rock was initially named Jebel Tariq (the mountain of Tariq) because it is here that Tariq ibn Ziyad unloaded with 12.000 Berber to invade the peninsula in 711. The Moors were expelled definitively in 1462 and the name " Jebel Tariq" was marked Gibraltar by its new Castilian Masters. This name remained when the Britanniques came in 1704. The Spain tried to reconquer Gibraltar but gave up after the Grand Seat of 1779 - 1783. So far, Gibraltar remains a subject of discord between the British and the Spaniards.
