Highway network

The highway network is the whole of the terrestrial lanes allowing the Transport by Véhicule S truck drivers, and in particular, the motorized vehicles (Automobile S, motor bikes, Autocar S, Heavy truck S…).

The type of Voirie of a section of the highway network determines the statute (also called the classification ) of the section considered and the responsibilities afférant there. Certain portions of the highway network are thus usable by all the types of vehicles, others are reserved for the registered vehicles . The Autoroute S are prohibited with certain types of vehicles (speed limits lower)

The highway network is composed of:

  • ways suitable for motor vehicles with coating (Street S, Road S, expressways, Highway S)
  • ways suitable for motor vehicles without coating (Way S of ground, Track S)

It does not include/understand:

  • the spaces suitable for motor vehicles intended for another use that circulation: parking spaces, surfaces of operation…
  • the ways nonsuitable for motor vehicles such as the Path S, Feels S mule…

The management of the highway network is responsibility for the communities:

  • the State for the trunk roads
  • the local government agencies. In France, they are the general advices departments for the secondary Roads and the trunk roads of local interest (since 2006)
  • the common for the communal roads.
Certain sections or particular works however are conceded at private companies, case in particular of the Autoroutes to Péage.

The police force of circulation is ensured by the police services main road (situation definitely different from those of the others means of transport for which the management of circulation is ensured by the internal services of the concessionary owners).
