Hiatus
The hiatus (Latin word for “opening”: to note that the H initial can be aspired or not) is a term of Linguistique indicating the succession of two Voyelle S pertaining to different Syllabe S, is inside a word (as in Aorte ) or at the border of two words ( it goes to… ).
Hiatus is considered cacophonous in many languages, to start with languages Latin are and Greek and those which of have inherited their sights grammatical and linguistic (languages of Europe Western, mainly), which explains that in Poésie (for which the esthetic designs wanted a long time that it represented the “beautiful language”) one frequently seeks to avoid it, which is noted easily in the reading of the towards French, where one elides or pronounces '' E '' null and void, according to, in order not to not “run up against” the ear.
Without going so far in the automatic elimination of the hiatuses, it is notable that many languages of Europe found various means grammaticalized to get rid of the hiatuses:
- insertion of a Phoneme ephelcystic: in French: goes there → go ahead ; in English, a /r/ of connection (cf ) can be made hear: law and order will be marked law-r and order . Its employment is considered faulty;
- reappearance of a phoneme of connection: the children ;
- Apheresis: in Greek old ὦ ἄναξ ỗ ánaks “O king! ” → ὦ ῎ναξ ỗ' naks ;
- Contraction: in Sanskrit Gaṇa + iśa “troop” + “lord” → Gaṇeśa “Lord of the troops” (made up Word);
- elision: the heart → the heart ; if it → if it ;
- use of a Form of a word other than that until one waits: my heart → my heart (whereas my is normally reserved for the masculines), Castillan the alma , “the heart” → el alma (even proceeded), etc
All these modifications belong to the rules of Sandhi of each language and aim at supporting the Euphonie.

In medicine, the term is used to indicate an opening. For example, the hiatus œsophagien is the diaphragmatic opening by which the esophagus passes from the thorax to the abdomen (see also the article on the Hernie hiatale).The term can also mean variation, distance, a discontinuity, a divergence from point of view (“There is a hiatus between the theory and the practice, the owner and the trade unions”).
