Hestur , also named Hestoy (literally: the island Horse ), is located in the archipelago of the Faroe Islands.

The Commune of Hestur includes/understands also the island close to Koltur (“the foal”) with its two inhabitants (2005) . These two islands have each one one village and face the south-eastern coast of the island of Streymoy.

History and geography

The first colonization of the island probably goes back to the time of the Viking S, at the latest with the Moyen-âge. With the southern point of the island, the Hælur , were found objects significant. Currently, a headlight is drawn up.

The climate on the Hælur is favorable to the culture of cereals but not to the fishing, with the result that the islanders moved west of the island until the place where the current village is.

There are four tops : Nakkur (296 m), Múlin (421 m), Eggjarrók (421 m) and Álvastakkur (125 m).

In the north of the island decorated marshy grounds of four small lakes are, whose Fagradalsvatn is widest.

In spite of the low number of its inhabitants, and precisely with an aim of avoiding an inescapable depopulation, the island obtained its own public swimming pool in 1974.

The church of the village was built in 1910. The bell-tower, rare thing, have a roof of hexagonal form.

In 1919, the terrible accident of a small fishing boat reduced the male population of the island of a third.

Transport and economy

At the time, Hestur was connected to Tórshavn by ferry. Meanwhile new the port of Gamlarætt to the southern point of the island of Streymoy made it possible to shorten the maritime way. The inhabitants of the island devote themselves to fishing and agriculture.
