Hendrik Witbooi (towards 1825 - 1905) was a chief of the people Nama, branch of the Khoïkhoï, in the South-western African (current Namibia).
His/her grandfather, David Witbooi, were chief of tribe originating in the Colonie of the Cape. It carried out its tribe in the South-western African beyond the river Orange (river) until Namaland. His/her father, Moses Witbooi, were chief of tribe just like his uncle, Jonker Afrikaner, suzerain of the territories between Orange and the mouth of the Swakop river, which took along the tribe of the Oorlam until the site of current the Windhoek.
Hendrik Witbooi is itself born close Fish River in current the Namibia. He is educated by missionaries Lutherans. Hendrik Witbooi have 7 wire and 5 girls of which Isakk Witbooi.
The Namas of Witbooi were confronted on several occasions with other tribes Namas like with the Hereros.
Justified as well by the lure of gain as by a divine perception of its destiny, it decided to guide its people towards north the May 16th 1884, in spite of the opposition of his own father.
The February 22nd 1887, Paul Visser reversed Moses Witbooi and killed it to take its place of tribal chief. Hendrik Witbooi avenged his/her father the July 12th 1888 by killing its assassin. He then became the new chief of the clan of Witbooi and started to consolidate the bonds with the other tribes Namas which joined with its command.
He was not going to be long in entering in conflict with the new German colonial authorities of which he refused protection. He carried out during four years of 1893 to 1896 a intense Guerilla against the German colonial troops of Curt von François then of Theodor Leutwein. Overcome, it accepted German suzerainty. It took part however still in rising herero of 1904.
He died in October 1905 in full action against the colonial forces.
Since 1993, its effigy is reproduced on new banknotes of Namibia.
