Hendaye
Hendaye is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.
The Basque name is Hendaia .
Its inhabitants is called Hendayais.
Geography
Hendaye offers to its visitors his beach of 3,5km (longest of the Basque Côte), the castle of Abbadia and the field of the same name, property of the Conservatoire of the littoral.The city is divided into three parts:
- the Seaside resort of Hendaye-Beach at the edge of the Ocean, where are the complex of Thalassothérapie " Serge Blanco" , the marina (3rd of Aquitaine: 853 rings) and the major part of the restaurants of the city. The GR. 10 and the High excursion Pyrenean which cross the the Pyrenees until Banyuls-sur-Mer and the the Mediterranean, begin from the old casino, located at the center of the beach of Hendaye.
- the village of Hendaye-city on the Bay of Txingudi, where the house of Pierre Loti is.
- the district of Hendaye-station where is the international station, and all that is related to the crossing of frontiers (international bridge Saint Jacques).

Communes bordering
In north, Hendaye is bordered by the the Bay of Biscay.In the west, the commune is bathed by the Baie of Txingudi (Estuaire of the Bidassoa) which separates it from the Spain (comarque of Bidasoa-Txingudi: Irun and Hondarribia). Hendaye forms with its two Spanish neighbors the Consorcio Bidasoa-Txingudi.
History
Frontier town between the France and the Spain, Hendaye knew many turbulences at the time of the many wars between the two nations.At the time of the Franco-Spanish war, the city was taken in September 1636 by the Spaniards.
Witness of this past the fort Gaztelu Zahar destroyed then rebuilt many times, it was embellished by work of Vauban, then definitively shaven at the time of the Napoleonean Guerres, or the island of the Pheasants in the middle of the Bidassoa river. It is on the latter that the king Louis XIV met the king of Spain and that were signed the Traité of the Pyrenees in 1659 and later the marriage contract between Louis XIV and the infante Marie-Therese.
It is at the station of Hendaye that had place, the October 23rd 1940, the famous interview between Hitler and the general Franco, the latter reaffirming the non-alignment of its country in the Second world war.

Hendaye has two churches:
- Holy-Anne, in Hendaye beach: was built on the old vault Santa Anna (blessing of the church the August 7th 1938);
- Saint-Vincent, in Hendaye city: the principal church (17th century), several times destroyed (war, fire, the lightning), rebuilt starting from the beginning of the 19th century, it is now very beautiful, with three stages and a very beautiful orgue.
On the square, celebrates it and mysterious cyclic cross of Hendaye revealed by Fulcanelli in the Mystery of the Cathedrals.
Civil monuments
- the Fort
After various incidents, Louis XIV decided the construction of a more important fort, task which he entrusted to Vauban. This last came to Hendaye in 1685, during a round of inspection of coastal defenses. After having considered the construction again extremely more close to the mouth of Bidassoa, it decided to reinforce old the fort.
The April 23rd 1793 the fort, the church and most of the borough were entirely destroyed by Espagnols.
There remain today only some ruins of the fort, on the edge of Bidassoa, beside the monument with the morts.

Natural heritage
- In its inheritance, Hendaye holds something which will not cease growing with the wire of time: natural erosion detaches the cornice leaving behind it two enormous identical rocks, the Twins hendayais. The transborder economy weighs heavy on the level hendayais. Even if for a few years, the importance of the services of the State has tended to be reduced, it does not remain less consequent about it: customs, the SNCF…
Tourism accounts for, as for him, 15,9% of the richness of the city. With more than 11.000 commercial beds, a famous center of thalassotherapy and the 3rd marina of Aquitaine… the commune has indisputable assets in this sector.
Lastly, the parks of economic activities of Hendaye, intended for the establishments of companies, include/understand the site of affected Joncaux mainly to the industrial activities and commercial and that of Dorrondeguy open to the artisanal activities.
; The zone of activities of Joncaux
Served by the RN 111 and close to the highway A63 Paris-Madrid, the zone of activities of Joncaux occupies a strategic position within the Hendaye-Irun-Fontarrabie agglomeration.
The zone of activities extends on more than 33 hectares. The third of this surface corresponding to the site of old the autoport, was the subject of an operation of installation and economic reconversion. This operation made it possible to requalify the site in order to accommodate new companies and of redynamiser the zone of activities as a whole.
Thus, of new improved lands and the communal buildings with use of office and warehouse spaces available and services offer to the companies and the carriers of project, in particular:
• the reception center representing 1.810 m ², includes/understands a staff canteen, an post office, a meeting room of 100 places, a medical room and offices.
• the building of the forwarding agents proposes many flexible offices covering 1.950 m ².
• the center of companies, of a developed surface of 7500 m ² of floor, is composed of various buildings with use of workshops and offices, intended for the installation of small companies, craftsmen and lines of business.
This economic pole entered today its phase of maturity. More than 60 companies representing 1.450 employment are installed there, in particular:
• Bonnet Firn (group ELFI) specialized in the manufacture of refrigerating windows intended for large distribution (18 500 units per annum),
• Sokoa specialized in the production of office chairs occupies the first place in France in this sphere of activities.
• Sogibel manufacturer of agar-agar, product extracts from the algae intended for bacteriological research,
• Printing works Jean Laffontan
• Lake Basque Country, subsidiary of the Spanish company Torunsa, specialized in the mechanical subcontracting applied to auto industry.
This last establishment comes to consolidate a die of activity of mechanics already present in Hendaye through the companies Meca X and Echeverria (aeronautical),
• Etchenausia, joinery and cabinet work
• Direct Medical, installation of ambulances and medical equipment
Moreover, various specialized companies in transport and logistics are present on the site, such, Transports Sallaberry, Lapegue, Ibaremborde, TDF, SBTT, the latter is a subsidiary company of the Decoexsa company based with Irun.
Lastly, Quiksilver installed on the zone of activities an important unit of logistics (10 000 m ²) in the rehabilitated buildings of an old factory.
; The artisanal zone of Dorrondeguy
Located in limit is commune and served by the MINOR ROAD 658, the artisanal zone of Dorrondeguy extends on approximately 3 hectares.
