Heidwiller

Heidwiller is a common French, located in the department of the Haut-Rhin and the area Alsace. It is a small village of the Sundgau (area of the south of the Alsace). Heidwiller appears in 1105 under the denomination Heytewilare , but the village is quoted as of 977. Its name originates in the combination of the Germanic proper name Haido and of Latin villare which indicates a farm.

The 614 inhabitants (in 2003) of Heidwiller are of Heidwilleroises or Heidwillerois. The village has a surface of 448  hectares, it is located has an altitude of 227  m above the sea level.

History

Probably founded in 977 by the Mérovingiens, the village is the property of the counts of Ferrette until in 1324, where it is controlled by the house of Habsbourg until in 1789 (French revolution).

The castle of Heidwiller

  • 1105 : the existence of a lord of Heidwiller is mentioned for the first time.

  • 1367 : the castle passes by marriage to the hands of the Waldner de Freundstein.
  • 1412 : the castle becomes the property of the family of Morimont.
  • 1486 : the castle is repurchased by the family of Reinach.

The castle of Heidwiller is rebuilt between the 14th century and the 16th century. In 1789, it is reconverted in prison by the revolutionists, it will become distilling and school thereafter.

The construction of the initial church goes back to the 14th century, but it was destroyed then rebuilt several times.
