Headlight of Nice

In spite of the seniority of the town of Nice, it is only at the 18th century that a project of digging of a port is decided. It is between the hill of the Castle and the Mont Boron, on the large Lympia pond connected to the sea which it will be built. It is in 1860, when Nice becomes French that the project will start. During all this time, the project will know multiple forms, many different plans of architects put in competition.

Maritime indication by a Headlight, at the entry of this port, is not forgotten. In 1756, it is made mention on a plan of “the rise in the tower of the lamp of Lympia”. In 1761 on another plan, a tower appears on the end of the external mole. In 1764, an anonymous report considered the installation of a headlight on the hill of the old castle.

History

As of 1860, one notes that the entry of the port is too narrow and that pilots are necessary to make enter the boats. In 1862, a provisional headlight is installed on the old quay of the customs. A white fixed light varied by long glares red every 30 seconds is installed on a cylindrical turret in 15 m height masonry. In 1865, Nice is equipped officially with a maritime establishment of indication.

In the years 1880, the enlarging of the port will advance the headlight towards the broad one by a first prolongation of the pier external of 100 meters. A cylindrical news 14,45 m height tower installed on the pierhead of the prolonged mole receives this same fire. In 1909 a red fixed light on a cast iron candelabrum is installed at the end of the prolonged mole. In 1916 it is replaced by a fire with 1 red glare every 5 seconds.

In 1928, the headlight is demolished and another fire is installed on on cylindrical news tower in masonry at the end of the prolongation of 235 m of the mole. In 1945, because of the destruction of the headlight by a German bombardment, it is replaced by a scaffold out of wooden a 7 meters height.

Current headlight

In 1952, a white pyramidal square tower with red lantern and white dome is rebuilt at the end of the pier at sea Port of Nice. It is automated.

a great project of refitting of the wearing of Nice is in hand envisaging the destruction of the current dam and its doubling by an external dam twice larger which will be able to accommodate the boats of large cruising.
