Harry Rée

Harry Rée (1914 - 1991) was a British specialist in education and, during the Second world war, an agent of the British secret service Special Operations Executive which was sent in France to help resistance within networks ACROBAT and STOCKBROCKER of the section F, in particular by sabotaging the Peugeot factories in Sochaux.

Biography

First years

1914 . October 15th, birth of Harry Alfred Rée .
Education in Shrewsberry School.
1936-37 . - He studies with the Institut of Education and the Universié of London . He becomes professor of language to the Grammar School of Bradford and to the Beckenham and Penge County School .
1940 . He marries Hetty.

Period of the war

Rée joined the Special Operations Executive, is named Capitaine and receives the name of war “ César ”.

1943 .

*Avril. It is parachuted in France and joined network ACROBAT around Montbeliard.
* Later it becomes active in network STOCKBROCKER around Belfort.
*Rée states that it is not favorable to the bombardments of RAF in France, estimating that they tend to turn over the French public opinion against the Allies. It suggests that agents of the SOE organize on the ground of effective sabotages of factories.
* November 5th. It successfully organizes the sabotage of the Peugeot factory of Sochaux, which works for the Germans (turrets of tanks, equipment of engines). For that, he convinces the local director who he could avoid of new bombardments (vague and expensive in human lives) by sabotaging his factories itself. The factory will be stopped three months.
* November 15th. It organizes a attack-lure against compressors and transformers with Sochaux to divert the suspicions.
*Les German seeks to capture it. He escapes a group from Feldgendarmerie which draws four times above to him, and he must swim in a river crossing a forest of the surroundings. He manages to escape in Switzerland and to preserve contacts with his organization.
1944 .
*Mai. He is replaced by an American officer E.F. Floege and turns over to Great Britain, where it will be affected with the staff of the FFI.
*Il plays in the film Now it Can Be Told (or School for Danger ), produced by a cinematographic unit of the RAF, which tells the activities of the SOE in France.

Career of specialist in education

*Après the war, Rée becomes director of Grammar School for boys of Watford.

1963-1974 . - He is the first professor of the studies of education at the University of York. He preaches education by the " understanding schools". He is an active member of the Société for the Promotion of the Reform of Education and the Programme for the Reform of Secondary Education .

1974 . He leaves the university and goes in Woodberry Down Comprehensive School in Hackney, where he becomes an ordinary professor.

1980 . He takes his retirement. He continues to preach the establishment of close links between the schools of the European Community and the abrogation of the Education Act of 1988.

1991 . He dies on May 17th.
