Harran

Harran (or Carrhes ) is an archeological site in the south-east of the current Turkey, with the crossing of the roads of Damas, Karkemich and Ninive. This situation made of it a strategic point during the History. Assyrian inscriptions mention this place towards 1100 before the Christian era under the name of Harranu which would mean road in Akkadien. Harran was burned by the Hittites.

Harran was also known in high-antiquity to be one of the two principal sanctuaries (with the town of Ur) which are dedicated to the God-Moon Sîn, venerated by the Sémites of Mésopotamie.

It is also mentioned Harran in the Bible as being the city where Terah settles, the father of Abraham, after having left Ur. It is the place where the biblical account locates the house of Laban, brother of Rébecca and father-in-law of Jacob.

Harran was the site of famous the Bataille of Carrhes.
