Biography

With Anselm Feuerbach, the sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand and Arnold Böcklin, von Marées belongs to the painters that they were called: Deutsch-Römer another important group German artists working in Italy as from the years 1860 after that of the '' Nazaréens ''. After studies with the Academy of the Art schools of Berlin, it goes to Munich in 1857 when it charged to carry out copies of old Masters in Italy. Influenced by Rubens and the Italian art, it is interested in the Venetian Rebirth and settles definitively in Rome in 1875. He knew very well French Art, Courbet, Manet, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. In 1869, he travels to France and Spain. Its compositions go back to a thorough study of Antiquity and Rebirth, they do not insert the naked ones in an action but must be included/understood like a study, a variation on the movement, the installation and the gesture. He admires Léonard de Vinci, Michel-Angel, but also Poussin and Bagnacavallo. He takes as a starting point the frescos of Luca Signorelli with Orvieto for three men in a painted landscape with Florence. A whole room is devoted to him to the Neue Pinakothek (New Art gallery) of Munich.
