H is the 8th letter and the 6th Consonne of the Latin alphabet.

History

The Semitic letter ח ( KH and) probably represented the deaf pharyngal fricative Consonne. The form of the character undoubtedly represents a Clôture. The H of the Greek alphabet primitive represented the fricative Consonne glottale deaf, but later this letter became eta (Η, η), a long vowel. In Greek modern this Phonème amalgamated with.

The Etruscan and the Latin had the phoneme, but all the Romance languages lost this sound.

Use in French

H is a female name when one pronounces this letter aitch and masculine when it is pronounced He . However, in France, aitch seems to be the pronunciation the most use and one crushing majority of the population regards this name thus marked as masculine, the majority of the dictionaries making little by little in the same way, except the Littré. Note: it is thus for the letters F, H, L, M, NR, R, and S.

In French, H can be dumb or aspired, but it does not represent any sound.
