HMS Phaeton
HMS Phaeton was a frigate of the Royal Navy which was in service in the Pacifique during the Napoleonean Guerres.
Knowing Napoleon combined with the Netherlands against the England, the ships of the Royal Navy started to pursue the boats Dutch. In 1808, the " Phaeton" in ambush outside the Japanese bay of Nagasaki to attack a pair of merchant ships Dutch awaited which were awaited the port. The boats Dutch, prevented British ambush , cancelled their passage by Nagasaki, and the " Phaeton" was with court of provisions.
The " Phaeton" entered the port of Nagasaki the October 14th under house Dutch and captured representatives Dutch who were assembled on board with the enclave Dutch of Dejima, and had required provisions. The " Phaeton" made fire thanks to its guns and rifles to support its requests, threatening to destroy the boats Japanese and Chinese in bay.
The thin forces Japanese stationed with Nagasaki were unable to push back the " Phaeton" , and of the vivres were sent to the boat. The commission agent of Nagasaki, Matsudaira Genpei, committed suicide of dishonor by Seppuku.
Following the attack of the " Phaeton" , the Bakufu reinforced coastal defenses, and promulgated a law prohibiting the abroads to unload, under penalty of dead (1825~1842, Muninen-uchikowashi-rei). The Bakufu also required of official interpreters to learn the English and the Russian , giving up their concentration on the Dutch. In 1814, the first dictionary English-japanese (6 000 words) was written by the interpreter of Dutch Motoki Shozaemon.
