Hévéa

The hévéa is the vernacular name of the Arbre ( Hevea brasiliensis ), of the Hevea , whose sap called latex is used to be transformed into rubber.

Description

The hévéa is a large tree from 30 to 40 meters in height, whose trunk can reach 1,5 m in diameter close to the ground.

The fruit is a tricoque capsule.

This species is originating in large the Amazon forest:

Its culture was widespread in all the tropical areas, in particular in the South-East Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Sri Lanka, China, etc), like in Africa (Nigeria, Liberia, Cameroun, Ivory Coast). It extends on 8,3 million hectares approximately.

Economic aspects

Asia is the principal producing natural rubber area (95% of the world total). The worldwide production is estimated at 9,7 million tons approximately, including three country, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, represents nearly the three quarters.
