Gustave Nalinne

Gustave Nalinne (Liege 1795 - Charleroi March 15th, 1851) is one of the figures outstanding of the history of Charleroi (Belgium).

He was appointed with the National congress (1830).

liberal Burgomaster of Charleroi of 1834 to 1851, he was the first burgomaster builder of Charleroi. One of its initiatives was to found free primary school education in Charleroi. It was estimated of the king LĂ©opold  I {{er}}, which visited him in its private residence. It is told that, by fear that its modest dwelling disappoints the king, Gustave Nalinne made set up a stage in boards on the roof of its house in order to give him the paces of a middle-class residence.

Inter alia things, it made build tens of dwellings on all the territory of the commune. Partisan of a policy of great work, it also made build a horse-gear of cavalry (place of the Horse-gear) as well as the barracks of gendarmerie of Charleroi.

This man who influenced the development of Charleroi so much was immortalisé in 1860 by giving his name to a street connecting the street of the Mountain to the street of France.

It is in the street Gustave Nalinne that celebrates it Jacques Bertrand was born, author of the anthem of Carolos: Country of Charleroi .
