Gulf of Guinea

The gulf of Guinea is part of the Atlantic Ocean in the south-west of the Africa. The international hydrographic Organization defines the gulf of Guinea by a line (an arc of large circle) running of the Cape Palmas in the Liberia until the Cape Lopez with the Gabon. The southern part of Western Africa until the north of this gulf was historically called High Guinea. The west coast of southernmost Africa until the south of this gulf was historically called Low Guinea.

Today, the name Guinea relates to three countries: the Guinea, the Guinea-Bissau and the Guinea Equatoriale. It is also used for the New Guinea in Southeast Asia.
