Guilin

Guilin (zh-Hant 桂林; Pinyin: Guìlín ; literally “the wood of the cinnamon-trees”) is a city of the autonomous region Guangxi, in China, located on the Rivière Li.

Founded there is more: 2000 years under the Dynasty Qin, Guilin is one of the tourist destinations most known of Guangxi, of which it is the old capital.

The city extends today on: 2000  km ² and counts approximately: 600000 inhabitants. A walk of the opposition was held there at spring 1989.

Guilin is known for its landscape made up of small mountains in the shape of very sloping bumps, characteristic of this area. This almost supernatural Paysage is very appreciated tourists. It is there also an airport national.

Guilin was also one of the fortified towns of Chinese resistance against the Japanese.

History

In 314 av. J. - C., a small hamlet is created on the banks of the river Li.

In 111 av. J. - C., during the reign of the emperor Wu of the Dynasty Han, the county of Shi An is established.

In 507, the city takes the name of Guizhou. Prosperous Guizhou under the dynasties Tang and Song but remains a county. The city is also a bond between the south-western central government and border, and the place since which the regular army supervises the border. Channels are built through the city so that the reserves of food can be transported directly since the areas of production of the plain of the Yangzi towards the extreme south-west of the empire.

Under the Dynasty Ming, Guizhou becomes a capital because of its immense role in the area. In 1914, Nanning became the capital of the province.

In 1940, the city acquired its current name. In 1981, the old city was registered with the list of the Council of State like one of the four cities with Beijing, Hangzhou and Suzhou where the protection of the historical and cultural heritage and the landscapes were to be treated like a priority.

Guilin at the time of the mad years

During the Japanese invasion of 1936, the karstic reliefs of Lijiang are used as refuge with the nationalist army, driven out of coastal China by the Japaneses. Guomindang makes even of Guilin its capital, before going to be established in Chongqing in 1938. During these two years, the population of Guilin increases considerably because of the flood of the refugees, reaching the million inhabitants. The assertion of an national identity animates there an intense intellectual life with its publishers, its newspapers, and its theater companies. In 1944, the area falls to the hands from the Japanese, who mainly sweep the vestiges of his history.

Guilin and its herd of hills

According to an old legend, the sea had formerly threatened the area of Guangxi. Immortal, moved by the fate of the inhabitants, decided to establish a stopping against destroying water. It moved the hills of the north of China by metamorphosing them in black goats, then it led this immense herd towards Guilin. When the animals arrived, a strange wind started to blow and the goats, with one, regained their original shape of hills.

Economy

In 2004, total GDP was of 45,5 billion Yuan S, and the GDP per capita of: 9240 yuans.
