The Déclaration of public utility of this new network was obtained in 1999 and the startup of the tram took place in 2002

The network, exploited under the name of tram , does not use therefore a technology of Tramway traditional, but that known as of the Tramway on tire.
Technically, this transport system consists of an Bi-articulated mégabus of 24,50 meters (three named modules A/1er modulates, C/2e modulates and B/3e modulates), with low integral, travelling floor in Exclusive right of way and guided by a central guide rail on the entirety of the line, contrary to the system of Nancy which is used in mode not guided on part of the course. The food is electric, by pantograph. The vehicle is dual-mode and functions in road mode to go to the deposit and to move there.

This material was manufactured by the Canadian company Bombardier under name Transport on reserved way , or TVR. Its east production actuellemeent stopped by the manufacturer, which presents big problems for the network of Caen, in the fleet of 24 oars is insufficient to ensure the liner trafic (42.000 travellers/day), which leads the owner to double the line by buses at the rush hours.
Projects
Viacities decided on September 24th, 2003 to launch a feasibility study for a line 2 and the extension of line 1.With regard to line 1, it would be about the promonger at its 4 ends, that is to say 7,9 km of additional lines, which raises the question of the acquisition of additional oars, currently given up by the manufacturer. However, this one has made to know that it was to lay out with to launch manufacture of version modernized of TVR, provided that an ordering of at least 20 oars is made to him, which exceeds the needs related to the simple prolongation for line 1, estimated at a dozen vehicles
