History

Ancient period

A Roman way connected Rheims and Trier. It seems that Chesne was there, in the beginning, a commercial locality. The traces of the Roman way are: the current site of the street Notre-Dame and a profile of the embankment and base of roadway of this way, with the locality the Way of Rheims .

One also finds, the traces of an agricultural village of IIIe century towards the locality the Forks , and of a Diverticulum between the Roman way and this village.

The Middle Ages and modern Time

It seems that Chesne never had Privilège, neither of free city, nor of commune, under the Old Mode. The abbots of Saint Remi of Rheims were lords and Masters there.

A legend mingles the inhabitants with Chesne at the origins of the sacring of kings de France with Rheims. At the time of a war against the English, one would have found the Sainte Bulb there. The middle-class of the city had thus the privilege to be present at the Sacre. It is also why the current Blason of the common reproduces a Colombe come from the sky and carrying the bulb.

During the Middle Ages, Chesne was a stage in the pilgrimage towards Saint Jacques de Compostelle. What allowed the commercial and religious development of the city by the construction of a church, and woke up the interest of the abbots of Saint Remi for the city.

The city was devastated at the time of the Guerre One hundred Year old

Since 1789

In September 1792, the Armed with the Ardennes, led by Dumouriez, pushes back the Prussian armies, carried out by Brunswick barring the passages of the processions of the Argonne (that of Chesne is most septentrional), causing the Bataille of Valmy (and the proclamation of the First Republic).

The Channel of the Ardennes, completed in 1835, crosses Chesne. It is partly fed by the Lac of Bairon, located on the territory of the commune.

Emile Zola, in the novel the Rout , made there spend one night to Napoleon III, little before the Demolished of Sedan, about on August 28th, 1870.

About 1897 is open a railway line metric connecting Raucourt to Vouziers. There remains only one station about it.

The commune is occupied during all the duration of the conflict of the First World War by the German troops. In November 1918, the German troops in retirement take along all the population, which finds the November 11th with Liege.

The city was destroyed during the Bombardement S of May 1940, at the time of the opening of the German army with Sedan. The whole of the masonries of the center town dates from the rebuilding of the city, which lasted approximately 10 years as from 1947. The architectural unit is striking, and, in the style of this time, the town hall and the school are successful enough
