Grez-Doiceau

Grez-Doiceau (in Dutch: Graven , in Wallon Gré ) is a common French-speaking of Belgium located in Walloon region in the Province of the Walloon Brabant.

At July 1st, 2004, the total population of this commune is of 12.313 inhabitants (6 050 men and 6.263 women). The total surface area is of 55,88 km ².

History

Two polished flint axes were found by digging a well on the hill of Lowa not far from the center of Grez.
The ruins of a Roman villa were discovered in 1860 in fields between Morsaint and Grez, it does not remain about it any more rien.
A necropolis mérovingienne of 436 tombs of V at the VII century was discovered in 2002 on the territory of Bossut-Gottechain between Bossut and Grez.
January 2nd, 1233 Henri Ier duke of the Brabant grants a charter to the middle-class men of Grez.
In 1374 Grez did not count 99 households, in 1495 it did not count any more but 38.
of it About 1650 one starts to extract the stone with lime from the hill of Lowas during 250 years this industry will exist in Grez.
In 1852 of many Gréziens leave the village for Charleroi (more than 80 people) and 56 families towards the Wisconsin in the United States.
In 1907 one installs the water supply, in 1911 one places a public phone in a coffee of the Place of Grez.
