The Wappenfels of Chessiloch

In the commune of Grellingen is the Kaltbrunnenoù valley runs the Birse. At the time of the First World War, this valley was of a great strategic importance, in particular to ensure road and railway connection between the town of Basle and the remainder of the Suisse. For this reason, several military units were in garrison at this place, precisely with the foot of a cliff called Chessiloch . When one of the soldiers started to paint on the rock face the emblem of its unit, others followed the movement until covering cliff of paintings and sculptures.

The site is classified like site protected by the UNEP, under the responsibility of the canton of Basle-Countryside.
