Green Lantern

Green Lantern (the green lantern in English) is a Comic S American invented in 1940, and published by the editor cd. Comics.

The name Green Lantern was carried by several characters who were the heroes of this series. Their common point is that they draw their super-capacities from a green Anneau (a stylized lantern) which gives to its carrier the capacity to do and create all that it wishes with a light of green energy; that remaining possible if it has a sufficient psychological force (in certain cases, the only dead end is wood for first Green Lantern of the Earth and the yellow color for all the others). JLA account generally Green Lantern in its rows.

History of the publication

Green Lantern of the Golden age: Alan Scott

Originally called The Green Lantern , the character appears in number 16 of All-American Comics in 1940. Alan Scott enters in possession of a magic lantern from which it forges a green ring Thanks to this one, it can control the objects out of metal. The ring must be reloaded near the lantern every twenty-four hours. Thereafter, the capacities of the ring will affect all materials, except wood.

Alan Scott is a founding member of the Justice Society off America (JSA), a plain group superman. During the Years 1940, it is entitled to its own periodic title, Green Lantern . But, at the beginning of the Years 1950, with the end of the golden age of the comics, the character is abandoned with the end of the adventures of the JSA in number 57 of All-Star Comics in 1951.

It is supposed to have operated with Gotham City in the years 1940.

A few years later, cd. Comics makes a success of the revival of the character Green Lantern while making carry the costume and the capacities to a new hero. The successor of Scott is Hal Jordan, a test pilot which accepted the ring of extraterrestrial dying. He learns that the guards of the green lanterns are all members of the Green Lantern Corps , an interstellar organization of police force supervised by the “Guards of the Universe”. The new ring is inactive vis-a-vis all that is yellow. The editor Julius Schwartz had the desire to make Green Lantern a true series of Science-fiction to attract a young public attracted by this literary kind.

When Hal Jordan left the Body for one long period, Stewart was used as Green Lantern regular during this period. Currently, it is in secret mission on a remote planet.

Green Lantern of the Modern Age: Kyle Rayner

One of the Guards survived however and passed one of the rings to Land randomly selected: Kyle Rayner, a draftsman Otaku. The new hero had evil to enter this role of dispenser of justice, preferring to make use of the capacities to bring back to the life characters of Manga. He knew as Jordan an episode of delusions of grandeur under the divine name of Ion.

The series Rayner time knew episodes which remained famous, in particular by the existence of a supporting character who is homosexual, made rare in the American comics because of the monitoring of consumers' associations.

Topicality

Hal Jordan is recently ressuscity at the time of the mini-series Green Lantern: Rebirth , and is become again the hero of the series Green Lantern . Guy Gardner and Kilowog were the heroes of the mini-series Green Lantern: Reload , based on the reconstitution of Green Lantern Corps.

Inspiration

The Body of Green Lanterns created at the same time as the character of Hall Jordan seems to take as a starting point the Lensmen of the author E.E. Doc. Smith:
  • regrouping of characters of different extraterrestrial people.
  • port of an object giving of the capacities.
  • monitoring of a more advanced and wise race.

The editor Julius Schwartz and the first author of Green Lantern time Hall Jordan, John Broome, have both denied to be itself inspired of the Lensmen, and to have even read these stories.

Other media

Hal Jordan was the hero of part of the emissions of cartoons Aquaman/Superman Hour and Ligue of the Dispensers of justice of America , and it took part in episodes isolated in the cartoons from several heroes from cd. Comics.

Kyle Rayner appears in an episode of Superman: The Animated Series , in which it is allowed in the Body of Green Lanterns.

John Stewart appears as a member in the animated series of the Ligue of the Dispensers of justice , even if Rayner is mentioned in an episode. The ring of Stewart in this series poses problems with what could be explained in the comics on the capacities of the rings.

In the series Duck Dodgers with Daffy Duck, a problem of sorting of detergent gives to Dodgers the costume of Hall Jordan and its ring.
