Govindappa Venkataswamy
Govindappa Venkataswamy is a ophthalmic Chirurgie N Indian born in 1918. He is the founder of the ophthalmic hospital of surgery Aravind. He was rewarded for the Médaille Padma Shri in 1973.
While designing a new model of interventions of the Cataract, more productive, without harming the quality of the operation, it managed to facilitate the access to the care of the populations most stripped in India.
On two hundred and thousand annual operations, 47% are free for the patient, 18% at a price weaker than the cost price. Only 35% of the patients pay with the normal tariff to finance the unit. The hospitals founded by Venakataswamy are based on the natural solidarity of the easiest patients with regard to poorest, without carrying out the least control of income. And its model is in spite of very profitable since it releases each year of the benefit which it reinvests in new structures.
