Government Charles de Gaulle (2)

France - provisional Modes (1944-1947)

Context

This second government of the general de Gaulle, formed on November 13rd, is characterized by the entry of four communist ministers (Maurice Thorez, Ambroise Croizat, François Billoux and Charles Tillon). After their strong progression with the elections of October 1946 (26 % of the voices and 160 seats), they assert the direction of the government highly.

De Gaulle puts all her weight in the balance and succeeds in limiting for some time their influence to the government but will not be able to prevent the return of the “Republic of the parties” and the politicking play. It is what will justify its departure later three months: “The exclusive mode of the parties is reappeared. I reject it. But, unless establishing by the force a dictatorship of which I do not want, and who undoubtedly would turn badly, I do not have the means of preventing this experiment. ”
