Goro Nickel

Goro Nickel is a company of extraction of ore and production of Nickel and Cobalt, located in the south of the New Caledonia and whose majority shareholder to a total value of 69%, Inco is also the technological partner.

This company was created in order to exploit the layer of the plate of Goro. For that a mine with open sky will be dug, a complex of production of nickel and a port in bay of built Prony.

The progressive starting of the mining and industrial complex, currently in construction, will begin in 2009, with a production with full capacity envisaged in 2013.

The factory has best technologies available such as the coal station supplemented by a power station to heavy fuel. The sulphuric factory of acid will permettera to treat ground (or laterite) including/understanding nickel rates lower than only 2%.

This very important project on a territory scale (2 500 direct uses or indirect, is 5% of the active population, and the equivalent from 10 to 12% of the annual gross domestic product of the territory) underwent many misadventures, envisaged at the origin in 2004, the opening was pushed back because of many political, environmental and economic problems. Thus, the construction of the site required the destruction of seven hectares of forest primary education without governmental agreements nor with the tribes of the corner and the site is at the edge of the southern lagoon, exposed to the possible cyclones.

Goro Nickel was committed applying best technologies available in order to protect a fragile environment. The most strict standards of rejection will be applied, the complete rehabilitation of the mining sites is programmed, with the use of endemic local species.
