Google Talk

Google Talk is a Logiciel owner and service of Instant messaging and voice on IP based on Jabber developed by the company Google left in beta release the August 24th 2005. Google Talk represents at the same time the service as well as the Logiciel owner customer making it possible to connect itself to this service.

The Google Talk software is available for the moment only for:

  • Windows 2000,2003, XP, Vista
  • the version 2006 of the PDA Nokia 770 which functions under Linux
  • on the Blackberry
  • on any platform supporting Flash thanks to Google Talk Gadget.

Its interface tries to be characterized by its simple and light aspect, and not overloaded.

Protocol open standard

Contrary to the other instant message software, Google Talk uses the standard and open protocol Jabber/XMPP while encouraging to use its own customer in order to connect itself to the Google Talk service.

From the use of an opened protocol, you can also connect you to the Google Talk instant message service starting from a customer Jabber standard. The voice on IP however is not yet completely developed. The communication Jabber inter-waiter (“s2s”, for “server to server”) was implemented in the service of Google Talk the January 17th 2006, Google Talk is thus opened with the whole of world public the Jabber network (network known as “federate”).

Voice

The voice on IP uses the open protocol Jingle in the course of standardization and of the free codecs (Speex) and owners (GIPS).

Integration in Gmail

In February 2006 for the French version (during 2005 for the American version), Google Talk profited from an integration of its services in Gmail. It became possible there to use the majority of the functions of instant messaging since the service of email on line of Google, which can inter alia allowing chatter while consulting its emails or vice versa, but especially to be able to do that on almost all Operating system and any type of navigator (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Camino, etc). Moreover, Gmail makes it possible by defect to preserve the entirety of the conversations carried out via this Google Talk service integrated.

Technique

Google announced that the principal goal of the Google Talk service is the Interopérabilité. Google Talk uses Jabber (XMPP) to provide an extensible instant messaging. Since January 2006, Google Talk allows the communications of waiter waiter, and thus the users of Google Talk can speak to the users about other public Jabber waiters about the whole world.

The December 15th 2005, Google published libjingle , a free Bibliothèque written in C++ implementing Jingle, a whole of extensions to XMPP for the support of the voice on IP (VoIP), and in the long term the transfer of file and it video inter alia (Jingle is a protocol of initialization of multi-media session).

Google Talk figure not Jabber flow, but uses in the place a not-documented manner and not-standard to authenticate itself with the service, by recovering a token of a protected Web server. The customers other than that of Google must make safe their flows with TLS before sending the password, with the result that they remain quantified during all the session. Google affirms that all the messages (text and its) will be quantified in future versions.

The configurable options voluntarily are very limited. The official customer proposes the desinstallation of the software Gmail Notifier, of which it fulfills the same functions and adds new options.

Google Talk proposes, like certain customers of instant messaging, the support of the topics of windows of discussion. For that, it uses the same system of topic created initially for Adium but also used by Kopete and Skype for Mac OS X. This system of topic is based on XHTML and CS.

Lastly, since April 2007, GoogleTalk can be embarked on any Web page, thanks to a line of Javascript to be placed in the page in question.
