Goal-ball

The goal-ball is a Sport of balloon which is practiced by sportsmen visually handicapped persons (Malvoyant S or blind men), and belonged to the paralympic sports . He was invented after the Second world war. He is distinguished from the Torball, another collective sport of balloon practiced by sportsmen visually handicapped persons.

Rules

The goal-ball complies with the established rules by the Association of the sports for blind men, who take account of the handicap of the players.

Each part is divided into two half-times ten minutes each one, with a three minutes pause between the two. The goal of the play is to mark the most goals possible. In the event of equality, prolongations take place.

The attackers make roll the balloon with their hands, while the defenders use all their body to intercept the balloon.

Equipment and ground

The goal-ball is played with a rubber balloon which contains small bells making it possible to the players to locate it. It is held on a rectangular ground of 18 meters out of 9.

Classification of the handicaps

The visually handicapped persons are classified in three categories B (for blind):

  • the blind athletes are in the B1 category;
  • the athletes partially-sighted persons having a vision of 6/24 maximum and/or a field of vision of less than 5 degrees are in the B2 category;
  • the athletes partially-sighted persons having a vision ranging between 2/60 and 6/12 and/or one field of vision ranging between 5 and 20 degrees are in the B3 category.

Each team is made up of three players, who belong indifferently to the one of the three categories. By preoccupation with an equity, the players carry a stringcourse on the eyes during the match.

Competition

The goal-ball was a sport of demonstration to the paralympic Jeux of Toronto in 1976 and became an official sport with the paralympic Jeux of Seoul in 1988.

The first championship of goal-ball goes back to 1978 and took place in Austria.
