Go-Nijō

The emperor Go-Nijō (後二条天皇, Go-Nijō Tennō , March 9th 1285 - September 10th 1308) was the 94e emperor Japan, according to the traditional order of the succession, and reigned of the March 3rd 1301 with his death.

Its personal name was Kuniharu (邦治). Its posthumous Nom was given to him in memory of that of the emperor Nijō (one can translate the prefix Go-, 後, by “posterior”, which thus gives “posterior Nijō Emperor”.)

Genealogy

Go-Nijo¯ was the oldest son of the emperor Go-Uda and thus belonged to the line Daikakuji-to¯. His/her mother was Minamoto No Kishi (Seikamon In)

Biography

In 1286, the Go-Nijō future becomes Shinnō by imperial proclamation. In 1296, thanks to the rallying of the line Daikakuji-tō, he becomes prince héitier of his cousin the emperor Go-Fushimi of the line Jimyōin-tō.

Go-Nijō assembles on the throne the March 3rd 1301, following the abdication of Go-Fushimi, and remains emperor until his death of disease in 1308. During this period, his/her father, Go-Uda, reign as a emperor withdrawn.

During its reign, the argument of succession between the two lines of the continuous imperial family, and will be regulated only during the reign of its successor Hanazono.
