Biography
Wire of Piero Andrea da Verrazzano and Fiametta Capelli, belonging to a rich person florentine family, it intended for a maritime career . It accomplished several voyages in the the Eastern Mediterranean and recognized, some perhaps say, the Estuaire of the Hudson and the island of Newfoundland in 1508 with Thomas Aubert.End 1523, it was missionné by the king François I {{er}} to explore the zone ranging between the Florida and Newfoundland, in order to discover there an access giving on the Pacific Ocean. It started from Dieppe, to France, skirted the Spanish coast and crossed the Atlantique on a small caravel in company of about fifty men. It accosted close to Cape Fear on March 1st 1524 and after a short stop skirted the coast in direction of north. A little later, in what is now the North Carolina, it believed to see the Pacific Ocean behind a narrow strip of land. It was actually only about the Lagon of the Baie of Pamlico, length one hundred thirty kilometers and whose width reaches by places forty eight kilometers, separated from the Atlantic by the Outer Banks , a barrier of sandy islands. This error led the draftsmen of charts, to begin with the Viscount of Maggiolo in 1527 and the brother of Giovanni, Girolamo da Verrazano, in 1529, to represent the North America almost crossed in two parts connected by a Isthme. This erroneous interpretation spent one century with being corrected.
Further, in north, Verrazano discovered bay of New York, which it named Nouvelle Angouleme. Nowadays, the Pont Verrazano points out this visit. It prolonged its voyage towards the east, in direction of the Maine, then from Newfoundland, and returned to France.
Verrazano accomplished two other voyages. The first led it to the Brésil. At the time of the second, in 1528, it was killed by men of the Antilles, probably in Guadeloupe.
