Ghomala\'
The Ghomálá' (literally " language of the country/village") of the 11 bamilékés languages is one. It is resulting from the dialect of Bandjoun and acted as written language common to several bamilékés dialects spoken.
Localization
Ghomálá' is spoken in departments about the Province about the West:
- Mifi, Koung-Khi and Top-Plates: most of the three departments (except southern extrème and pockets in north and the West)
- Menoua:
- Bamboutos a pocket in the south
It represented 260.000 speakers in 1982 (SIL) and belongs, like the others languages bamilékés, with the family of the languages semi Bantou are. It covers today a surface of approximately 530.000 inhabitants (2001) without counting an important diaspora.
Dialects
- Ghomálá' of the Center (Bandjoun, OJ, We, Hom, Yogam, Baham),
- Ghomálá' of North (Fusap, Lang),
- Ghomálá' of South (Te, Pa, Dengkwop)
- Ngemba (Bamenjou, Bafunda, Bansoua, Baméka, Bamougoum).
The under-dialects of Baméka, Bansoa, and Balessing result from the South Ghomálá'. Ghomálá' North has 2 under-dialects, Ghomálá' of the center has of them 4 and Ngemba has 5 of them
