Ghisoni
Ghisoni is a common French, located in the department of the Haute-Corse and the Corsica area .
Geography
Contrary to so much of Corsican villages, perched on peaks and stop, Ghisoni although located at 650 meters of altitude occupies the bottom of a deep basin, near the confluence of two torrents, Regolo and Fium' Orbu.
The summits notched of South-east, reaching 1.535 meters and 1.260 meters, bear the unexpected names of Kyrie eleison and Christe Eleison.
The popular memory wants that they were thus baptized after the torment of Giovannali taken refuge with Ghisoni. Whereas the heretics went up to roughed-hew, the priest and people of the country would have requested for them, the repeating echo of the two mountains: Kyrie eleison… Christe Eleison…
History
The reverend father Salvadore Vitale announces the existence to Ghisoni, in year 430 of our era, of a church San Thoma de Grisino.
Mr. Cosimi, author of the " Greek toponymy of Corse" (published in 1953), shows the existence of a convent or a vault held by Byzantine monks at the 8th century.
The first mentions of Ghisoni date from the chronicles of the historian Giovanni della Grossa (1388 - 1464). Later, the handwritten atlas of Génois Vesconte Maglioni, dated January 20th, 1511 mentions also the existence of the village. If the exact date of the creation of the village dubious, it however is established that it was created well before Ajaccio (1380) and Bastia (1412).
The origin of the name of Ghisoni, between the name of a river of the province of Turin, of a painter or resulting of a purely religious origin, remains it also dubious. Mr. Cosimi thinks that the name of Ghisoni would come from name given by the Byzantine monks to their convent, namely, " remain of Jésus" , which becomes " IHIONI" , pronounced in Corsica Ghisoni or Isoni (after a vowel finishing the preceding word).
Ghisoni becomes chief town of canton by the law of April 20th, 1861 which forms a new canton while separating from that of Vezzani four of its old communes: Ghisoni, Ghisonaccia, Lugo di Nazza and Poggio di Nazza. With the last census of 1999, the canton counted 3.723 inhabitants (without double account).
During the second world war, Ghisoni released itself on September 9th, 1943, in particular thanks to the brothers Carlotti (Francis and Ange) who drove out a German detachment which placed in the school complex.
