Germain Demay

German Jean Demay, known also more simply under German Demay , is a Archiviste, born with Aiguillon on January 15th, 1819, died in Paris on October 4th, 1886.

In 1852, sculptor of formation, it is engaged by Louis Douët d' Arcq for the moulding shop of the seals of the Public records.

January 1st 1858 he becomes assistant manager of the historical section. He replaces his Master Douët d' Arcq as chief of this section in February 1882 and becomes member of the Committee of historical work in 1883.

One can say that he was the creator, the true one, the single creator of this marvellous collection of prints of seals, most complete which exists, where are joined together more than forty thousand different models. It is by a ceaseless work of thirty-three years that he managed to form this invaluable meeting of the types from where he knew to draw the most curious explanations and most unforeseen on the history, manners and the habits of our ancestors. All the inventories sigillographic published by the Public records, even those at which it did not put its name, are the work of Germain Demay. |Guiffrey (cf Bibliography) p. 25.
