Georges Hugnet

Georges Hugnet , born has Paris in 1906 and died in Saint Martin's day de Ré in 1974, is a poet, writer, graphic designer and scenario writer French.

He was the first historian of the Dadaïsme by his articles published in reviews like Cahiers D `Art and Minotaure since 1924. He became member of the surrealist movement in 1932, movement which he will leave in 1936 at the same time as Paul Éluard and Louis Aragon for political divergences with André Breton.

Passed this collective experiment, Georges Hugnet continued his research of the poetic absolute and the graphic beauty through various works as the automatic transfers with the ink black which it developed with his friend Oscar Dominguez, of the photomontages, photographic joinings, cuttings of newspapers like typographical hypothetical plays, or many panels of objects find, objects divert with elements made up of scattered wood, wood floated, stones, marine algas, tablecloths of restaurants, papers tear which will become, according to arbitrary chance, actors or supports creating as many bestiaries, as many herbaria, as many oneiric universes considered as as much D `poetic experiments graphic.

Georges Hugnet was also episodically bookbinder and designed some single bindings which it will entitle “ Livre - Object” which became bibliographical scarcities. The Work pictorial of Georges Hugnet, largely present in the largest museums of the world and collections or private foundations, is nevertheless second compared to its intrinsic poetic Work.

The German occupation will stop its activities D `editor “ the Editions of the Mountain ” due to rationing of paper; in the same way will be stopped literary review qu `it directed “ the Use of the Word ”. Georges Hugnet stopped all artistic activities of foreground to fight against the occupant and the mode of Vichy. He became thus a “helmeted” poet, according to the expensive expression with Pierre Seghers. During this period, Georges Hugnet, member of the group “ the Hand with feather ” took part in the development of many leaflets against the occupants and manufactured false pass in his workshop of binding to allow those which were sought by Gestapo to pass in free zone then abroad.

It is as at that time, as it Co-founded a clandestine publisher whose first work published was the Silence of the sea of Vercors. This house became with the release the Éditions of Midnight.

Released Paris, Georges Hugnet could be again devoted entirely to its Article.
