Georges Colomb

Georges Colomb , known as Christophe (Lure (Haute-Saône), May 25th 1856 - Nyons, January 3rd 1945) is one of the precursory of the Cartoon in France.

Christophe is especially known to be the author of illustrated stories published in serial at the end of the 19th century. Very fine observer of the company, inspired by the images of Épinal, he is the creator of characters like the Savant Cosine, the Sapeur Camember, the Family Fenouillard and the imps Plick and Plock.
The text of its works is characterized by an extremely required vocabulary, and, in addition, rich in allusions cultural, literary, historical and geographical as much as scientists. The subtle pun is entitled there also its to the service of a humor sometimes mild nutter as in the mischievousnesses of Plick and Plock, sometimes satirist ( the Family Fenouillard ), ironic but always tendre.
The notoriety of its boards should not make forget that it took part fully in the life of its time. Friend of Jean Jaurès, Baudrillard and Tristan Bernard, he was also botanist of reputation and pedagog moralist. He also gave private lessons to the Dreyfus children at the time of the business.

Biography

Wire of the main thing of the college of his city, Eugene Nicolas Colomb is the fourth child of the family. He studies with Besancon. The medium of its childhood will inspire later to him the decorations of the Sapeur Camember . Graduate arts at 16 years, science into 18, it integrates the National university in 1878, where it obtains a license of Mathematics, Physical sciences then of Natural science (among its school-fellows Henri Bergson appears). At its exit, he marries Helene Jacquet in 1882 and teaches the natural science with the future Lycée Condorcet where he will count among his pupils the young person Marcel Proust. In 1884, it is named professor with the college Faidherbe with Lille whose city strongly will inspire it for the family Fenouillard . It passes its Doctorat of sciences in 1887.

It supplements its income by drawings in various newspapers and starts to make appear in 1889 the first bands of the family Fenouillard , which hardly likes its hierarchy. It continues its publications under the pseudonym of Christophe (in reference to large the Christophe Colomb).

Of return to Paris it is named university lecturer with the Sorbonne where it finishes its career at the post of sub-manager of the laboratory of botany.

Untiring teaching, it will give courses to the college of young girls of Sévigné up to 70 years.

During the Second world war, it takes refuge with its family in the southern zone. He dies of the continuations of an obstruction of the bowels. He is buried in Asnières.

The curious reader will notice the progressive laicization of his albums; Artémise and Cunégonde, the two Fenouillard girls, marry with the church: one sees them knelt with Switzerland beside them. For the Camember sapper nothing is indicated, but when one arrives to the Cosinus scientist one notices that its (false) burial is purely civil, like the east his marriage at the end of the book (and yet Mrs Belazor widowed and was not divorced).

Christophe also illustrated in a very spiritual way of the delirious accounts of which he was not the author: Triumph of Bibulus , Three Miracles of Osiris and the Heritage of the Cousin Agathias , multiplying the tasty anachronisms.
