General governor of the Indies
The function of viceroy of the Indies - or rather of General governor of the Indies because it was then the exact denomination - was the highest station in the Indian administration during the British Raj. He was regarded as one of the most powerful functions to the world. The wife of the viceroy was called the vice-reine.
The function was created in 1773 and is extinct with the promulgation of the constitution of India. The denomination of viceroy of the Indies, which forever be official, started to be used in 1858.
