Gemini 9 (officially Gemini IX-A) is the seventh live mission of the Programme Gemini and the thirteenth American inhabited space mission.
Crew
- Thomas Stafford (2), pilot commander
- Eugene Cernan (1), pilot
Crew of reserve
- Jim Lovell, pilot commander
- Buzz Aldrin, pilot
Objectives
The crew envisaged at the origin for Gemini 9 was composed of Charles Bassett (commander) and of Elliott See (pilot). The February 28th 1966, they were killed in a plane crash whereas they made an approach, by bad visiblity, on the aerodrome of Saint Louis in the Missouri. Irony of fate, the hangar that they struck was that where the vessel Gemini 9 which was in the course of assembly, in the factories McDonnell. The crew of reserve (Stafford and Cernan) became titular then for this flight while the team of reserve of Gemini 10 advanced of a mission.Gemini 9 inherited the two main aims of Gemini 8:
- an appointment and a mooring with a rocket-target Agena.
- a extra-vehicular exit of one of both astronauts.
Course of the flight
June 1st the Lancement of Agena took place without problem but that of Gemini 9, programmed the same day, was deferred 48 hours because of failures of communication between the computers of edge and the ground. The appointment with the target began at once although the Télémétrie indicated since the beginning that the cap of protection of the module of mooring of Agena was always in place. While approaching, the crew saw that the explosive bolts had functioned but that the straps of maintenance, tightened too well, maintained the envelope in place. Because of projecting elements on the target, an exit to cut the straps was considered to be too dangerous and the mooring was abandoned. The third day, Cernan made an exit but mist was very quickly formed on the visor of its combination at the point to return it almost blind man. Moreover, it found that the movements were difficult. The exit was thus curtailed and the mission concentrated on various scientific experiments.
