Gavin Bryars

Gavin Bryars is a type-setter of music post-minimalist and Contrebassiste British born the January 16th 1943 with Goole (Yorkshire of the East). Regent of the College of 'Pataphysique.
Biography
It started by studying the Philosophie with the university of Sheffield before studying the composition with Cyril Ramsey and George Linstead. It starts then a career of double bass player of Jazz in the Années 1960, while taking part in the trio of Joseph Holbrooke, with the guitarist Derek Bailey and the beater Tony Oxley. The trio plays first of all of the relatively traditional jazz before passing to the free Improvisation. It is however not satisfied with this musical form and decides to be devoted to the composition.It composes The Sinking off the Titanic in 1969, then in 1970 Jesus blood never failed Me Yet , taken again in 1993, which will be worth an international recognition to him. Its music is described as Zen, hypnotic. It creates with the Opéra of Lyon in 1984 its first opera entitled Médée , put in scene by Bob Wilson. He works then on a second opera, Doctor Ox' S Experiment based on a text of Jules Verne and a booklet writes by Blake Morrison, then a third, G , always with a booklet written by Blake Morrison. It also composes for the theater, the cinema, and the ballet in particular Biped (2001) for Merce Cunningham.
He is the founder of the orchestra The Portsmouth Sinfonia become famous from his operation which consisted in accepting any musician, some are his musical competences. The repertory consisted of traditional parts. These parts were played in an experimental way, which consisted in not trying to play the partition exactly but rather causing production of by the orchestra a total sound impression of each part.
Works of Bryars were interpreted in particular by BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Quatuor Arditti, the Hilliard Ensemble, the Quatuor Balanescu, the double bass player of jazz Charlie Haden, the American guitarist Bill Frisell, or with its group, the Gavin Bryars Ensemble.
