Gave of Pau

The gave of Pau is a Rivière south-west of the France. The term “Gave” indicates a river in the the Western Pyrenees. It is about a pre-Celtic Hydronyme indicating in a general way a river. This name of gave has been used as common noun and has a very great vitality - almost invading, since certain Pyrenean rivers lost, for one century, their local name to become “the gave of… ”.

Its source is at the Cirque of Gavarnie - classified in 1997 like world heritage of humanity by UNESCO - in the department of the Hautes-Pyrénées. It bears the name of “gave of Pau” starting from Luz-Saint-Saver, collecting water of the Gave de Gavarnie and the Bastan.

Starting from the Confluence with the Gave d' Oloron it takes the name of Gaves joined together before throwing itself in the Adour with Peyrehorade in the department of the Landes.

Among the sources which feed it, the gave of Pau counts also famous the famous source miraculous of Lourdes.
