Gaston Lagaffe
Gaston Lagaffe is the main character of the humorous Cartoon of the same name, created in February 1957 by André Franquin, also creator of the Marsupilami, Modeste and Pompon and draftsman of Spirou and Fantasio. He was made famous for the Belgian magazine of cartoon the Newspaper of Spirou .
Characters
Gaston Lagaffe
Gaston Lagaffe is employee with the Journal of Spirou . He carries very worn Espadrille S, a sweater with too short green turtleneck and a Blue-jeans. Thin, the round head, the large nose and the hair always battle about it, its drawing is refined with time. Its favorite expression is “Me finally”, often associated with the “Rogntudjuuuu” of Pupil. Its arrival in the newspaper is announced mysteriously by traces of step in the margins of the pages of the newspaper. Without explanation for the reader initially. He appears for the first time in the newspaper of Spirou on February 28th 1957, in costume and bow tie, the following week as a black Jean, green pullover and espadrilles, then the week according to sitted on a chair, cigarette with the lips.
The following week an official statement of Fantasio (another character of Spirou) tries to clear up the situation with the readers: Gaston was recruited by a person of which he does not remember the name, but is persuaded that he is built for a career of hero. Not being able to be integrated in a series of the newspaper of Spirou, it becomes the first hero without employment.
One discovers this dialog worthy of what will be later the introduction of the serial the Prisoner :
- - Which are you?
- - Gaston.
- - What you made here?
- - I wait.
- - You await what?
- - I do not know… I await…
- - Which sent to you?
- - One said to me to come….
- - Which?
- - Know…
- more - to come to do what?
- - to work…
- - To work how?
- - Do not know… Me was engaged…
- - But you are of course that it is here that you must come?
- - Beuh…
- - Gaston.
Gaston first manner
Gaston is at the simply indolent, lazy beginning and on the occasion gaffor (finding the means of putting fire at the extinguishers , for example). Its blunders will give him, well after its appearance, a family name and a recurring function in the newspaper: to prevent from signing important contracts with Mr. De Mesmaeker (let us specify that De Mesmaeker is the name in the civilian of the draftsman Jidéhem, whose father was used as model to the famous business man unlucky person), to flood the buildings, etc
It then passes most of its time to try to avoid working (while hiding in a cupboard, or more simply while sleeping on its desk…).
Despite everything these very serious problems sometimes, Gaston is never made return.

With the passing of years, of indolent that it was, Gaston becomes astute and invents various objects and processes intended to facilitate work to him. Its system of grading of the mail, containing microphone-perforations, will leave pantois Prunelle and Fantasio until they discover the origin of the small holes: Gaston classified in bellevue by hanging the mail on his giant cactus.
Universe of Gaston
Gaston regularly tested himself with the practice of the music, singing sometimes, using conventional instruments (guitar, trombone, tuba, battery) but especially of the instruments of which he is the creator, emblématique being the Gaffophone, related with the African toothing-stone, but of bigger size, provided with a house, and equipped with a sonority to the effects devastators and unexpected. In a series of recurring gags, one sees the gaffophone thus causing the destruction of various buildings (of which the sixth stage of the drafting), equipment and vehicles (moving van, fighter plan…) but also to start the panic or the massive exodus of various animals. In the food field, Gaston posts on the one hand an attraction for a series of popular and not very elaborate products (canneded sardines, pilchards, sausages out of box, crepes…) whose consumption or preparation is carried out of course with the detriment of its clerical work. There too, the reciprocal attempts of Gaston to arrive to his ends, at Fantasio and later Pupil for preventing some, will give place to multiple variations.
In addition, it practices in all bona fide an experimental kitchen and which would be liked gastronomical (cod with the strawberries, cod with pineapple) but which only manages to cause the dislike and to involve various pathological states in its entourage, except (in addition to itself) for some friends and workmen of passage.
Equipped with an almost scientific spirit, Gaston devotes himself to “amusing chemistry”, using kits intended for the children. Obviously, it practices this activity in the building of the drafting of Spirou, with the greatest despair of Fantasio, then of Pupil. Gaffor of nature, Gaston, not reading well-sure step the directions for use, will succeed in several times exploding part of the building with his many experiments.
Gaston was surrounded little by little of various animals: a turbulent cat (" the cat dingue" , inspired of the proper cat of Franquin), a Black-headed gull attacking the people in the vicinity at the time of its days of anger, a red Poisson (Bubulle) and some Souris (of which one is called Cheese) which seems to reside in a permanent way at the office. Others appear in a specific way: a cow gained with a lottery, a hedgehog " kissifrott'"), a lion cub, an elephant painted pink, marine tortoises, a turkey and even a lobster (these two last initially intended to be cooked escaping this fate by the intervention from Gaston).
Like his inventor, Gaston is a defender of the animal cause, which is discovered in several boards. One can quote, inter alia, his intervention with a lid of dustbin and a t-piece of draftsman to prevent Prunelle from taking a sorter where the souriceaux ones have just been born, but also the board where; instead of its clerical work, it looks after many animals, and gives the feeding-bottle to kittens while saying to Fantasio " Yes, given up, a whole brood: there are people who would be needed F… in prison".
Gaston has a family, in particular his aunt Hortense whom one never sees but with which it renders service. She is owner of a garden and contrary to has musical tastes those of Prunelle… He also has a conducting uncle of bus and a nephew (what lets suppose that he has a brother or a sister).
Colleagues of office
- Fantasio (that of Spirou and Fantasio) is one of the pillars of the drafting. One generally sees it when it tries to sign the contracts with Mr. De Mesmaeker - without reaching that point, because of the interventions of Gaston… Astonishing inversion: symbol itself in the adventures of Spirou of imagination and the invention vis-a-vis the serious one of Spirou, it adopts the opposite attitude vis-a-vis Gaston who becomes in Fantasio what Fantasio was in Spirou ! At the time of the resumption of the series Spirou and Fantasio by Jean-Claude Fournier (~1970), Fantasio disappears from the series Gaston Lagaffe , Franquin did not want both Fantasio different in two series different and taken of load by two different draftsmen.
- Leon Prunelle is the successor of Fantasio at the post of head of Gaston. Colérique, large consuming adrenalin, smoking the pipe, it was sworn to be “the man who made work Gaston” and for this reason it pursues it continuously to prevent it from making any nap or any pause and to recall him that it must deal with the late mail. It also tries to prevent cooking, arranging, from inventing and, obviously, of gaffer. To note that Prunelle is the first character of cartoon to be sworn openly, using in particular of the rognnntudju , which is actually a deformation of an authentic swearword: “Name of God! ”.
- Yves Lebrac is one of the draftsmen of the newspaper. It is much more relaxed than Prunelle and tends to lose its work tools: gum, pencil, Indian ink… Often Gaston or his cat is there for something. It makes the court (perpetual) with the secretary who is in his office. He one is also accustomed of the word games cocasses which very often displease in Prunelle.
- Bertje Van Schrijfboek is the translator of the newspaper (its name derives from Flemish schrijven , to write, and boek , delivers). He very often laughs of the lucky finds of Gaston.
- Spirou (also that of Spirou and Fantasio) appears in some gags, to give the counterpart to Fantasio.
- Joseph Counting frame , countable acariâtre of the Dupuis editions, does not have of cease to track the useless expenditure of the drafting and particularly the expensive blunders of Gaston.
- Molar Melanie and Jules Soutier , respectively cleaning lady and caretaker of the editions Dupuis, they are generally furious against the blunders of Gaston who ransacks the material when it is not the boiler or the elevator.
- Charles Dupuis, director of the Editions Dupuis. One speaks about him, one foresees his person sometimes, but one will never see his face in the data base
- Yvan Delporte, editor association with the famous beard, is often shown , but never named .
- Jef Van Schrijfboek, brother of Bertje, appears in some gags of Gaston.
- Raoul Cauvin, scenario writer of the blue Tunics, appears in some gags of Gaston.
Secretaries
-
Miss Jeanne (" Me Jeanne" hen bird; for Gaston) is a colleague of Gaston, however, it occupies a very particular place. Indeed, it is in love with Gaston, who is also in love with it. Jeanne dedicates an admiration without terminal with Gaston. She admires her talent, her courage, her capacity to dare the most insane things, etc Gaston, as for him, goes until borrowing the large scales of the firemen thanks to one of her friends to visit him whereas this one had words with his/her mother. Sometimes however, it sometimes happens to him to disappoint it: whereas she believes that he engraves a heart with their initial on the bark of a tree trunk, Gaston is in fact drawing a face…
-
Miss Yvonne, châtain
-
Miss Sonia, brown
-
Miss Suzanne, blonde
Buddies
- Jules-of-at-Smith-in-face is a good friend of Gaston. He “works” in the office just opposite that of Gaston, on the other side of the street. Also try they to communicate thanks to a string connected to yoghourt pots tended between their windows, or they are sent radio-controlled planes, or then they try to tighten a cord above the street in full winter so that it is formed there Stalactite S of ice… It is a gaffor like Gaston.
-
Bertrand Labévue is another friend of Gaston. As its name indicates it, he is also a large gaffor. Gaston often tries to help it when this one spends the difficult moments to the office, for example while trying to provide him can-openers when Prunelle is put in war against the boxes of fruits at syrup and the can-openers essential. Depressive, Bertrand is also very greedy, but the culinary “exploits” of Gaston do nothing but reinforce his depression…
-
Manu , as for him, exerts very diverse trades: sometimes he is chimney sweeper, sometimes sewerman or person in charge of the installation of the descriptive panels in the street. It is always ready to help Gaston to annoy Longtarin.
Longtarin
Joseph Longtarin is a graded police officer (he is lance sergeant) working in the district of the drafting of Spirou. It is one of the preferred “victims” of Gaston and his friends: they damage its dear parking meters, replace them by candy distributers, add a system of remote control to it not to more have to go down “to nourish the dreadful eat-parts”, or quite to the contrary equip them with rockets of distress allowing to locate the infringments easily. N the other hand, Longtarin is baited on Gaston: it examines its new vehicles under all the seams to check if they are well to the standards, particularly monitors the parking meters around whose Gaston parks itself and puts his energy to draw up the greatest possible number of infringments to him. However it does not miss a heart: when Gaston and his friends manage to make push a tree around a parking meter, tree on whom birds make their nest, Longtarin decides (under the pressure of Gaston and its friends) that the people wanting to park itself will have to pay while nourishing oisillons them.
Mr. De Mesmaeker
Aime De Mesmaeker , says Mr. De Mesmaeker, is a rich person business man: he has a private aircraft (destroyed by Gaston) and has at least two girls, whose elder one rolls only in Alfa Romeo. It is always seen whereas it tries to sign “the contracts” with Fantasio then Prunelle, and, of rare times, Boulier or Mr. Dupuis.
Gaston each time makes miss the signature by these contracts (whose Franquin itself stated not to know the contents): it makes use to make a demonstration of its machine recycle paper, starts the fire protection systems of it on the cigar of Mr. De Mesmaeker, etc That attracts the lightnings of his/her colleagues to him and causes a recurring fury of Mr. De Mesmaeker. This last proposes to him however in a band to sign a contract for the sale of its Soupe with vegetables, and in another for its Apollo clock (the Cosmo-cuckoo, the clock advances some over its time).
It should be noted that the name of Mr. De Mesmaeker is drawn from that of the draftsman Jidéhem (" JDM" = Jean De Maesmaker), friend of Franquin and joint author of the series at the time of the first years of the series.
Misters Ducran & Lapoigne
Ducran & Lapoigne is associated with a company of Public works specialized in the construction of bridges. For their greater misfortune, their offices are joint Dupuis editions. They frequently undergo the repercussions of the blunders gastoniennes.
Albums
The albums of Gaston Lagaffe are very particular. Indeed, 15 principal albums were published between 1963 and 1996, and in 1997 took place a complete republication, in 19 albums, of all the gags published in the Newspaper of Spirou, classified by chronological order. In 2006, albums EO are republished by the Dupuis editions and marsu prod. The legend of number 5
The first edition of the albums from 1 to 5 were in small sizes. It is starting from number 6 that a4 format was adopted. A4 albums taking again the gags of albums 1 to 5 appeared then, with numbers starting with R like “retrospective” or “republication”, so that the R1 number is appeared after number 2 and the number 0 twenty years later. As the material present in the 5 albums small size was insufficient, it was necessary to supplement by gags in text to publish 4 albums, and there did not exist R5 collection, leaving a hole in the collection. It was the base many speculations and many gags. Even when an album was devoted to the genesis of the character (taking again texts and drawings only published in the Newspaper of Spirou ), it was numbered 0 and not 5 or R5. However, in 1986, the editions Dupuis published an album of gags up to that point ever put in album of Gaston, thus letting a legend of an untraceable R5 album crumble. This legend of N°5 at same summer the source of a history of Spirou and Fantasio (Unpleasant forger!) present in the album the youth of Spirou or one sees a trafficker trying to sell with the collectors a wrong number 5 of Gaston (the name of the N°5 forgery of the history: Full Lagaffe the paf). At the time of the 50 years of Gaston lagaffe, the 5 albums with Italian are republished and distributed in Belgium exclusively.

Regional languages and dialects
After having published a first “Gaston” into Breton, the editor Yoran Embanner signed a contract with Dupuis in order to translate the album n° 10 of the new collection into seven languages: the Walloon, the Alsatian one, Basque, the Breton one, Corsican, the occitan and the Savoyard one.
The album n° 10 takes again to gags of the albums a gaffor knowing gaffer , Lagaffe spoils us and On line blunder .
It was published with 4000 specimens as a Walloon, 1500 specimens in Corsican and 2000 specimens in the other languages. The Walloon version, whose translator is Yannick Bauthière, is the first data base published in Wallon unified.
The film
The cartoon was adapted in 1981 in a Film live French heading Fais blunder to the blunder! . It was carried out by Paul Boujenah and included/understood Roger Mirmont in the role of the character of Gaston.
The film was a failure. The interpretation of the caricatural characters of STRIP CARTOONS in a credible context being already difficult (although the French comedies tend to show caricatural characters without much problem), but the realization was apparently not either with the height. A particular problem came from an intervention of Franquin itself: he did not want that its characters are directly adapted and had prohibited that one employs their names. Because of this intervention, the characters changed name, which could only disappoint even more the fans: Gaston was famous “G”, Prunelle “Prunus”, Miss Jeanne “Pénélope” and of Mesmaeker “Mercantilos”.
