Galandou Diouf

Galandou Diouf was a politician Senegalese, born in 1875, with Saint-Louis (Senegal) and died in 1941.

Biography

Born in a Moslem family, Galandou Diouf follows a schooling in a catholic structure and undertakes a career of teacher then of employee.

In 1909, he is the first African elected official coming from the French colonies, and becomes representing commune of Rufisque at the General advice in Saint-Louis. He is elected appointed of Senegal in 1934 (fine in 1941). He is then supported by a coalition including/understanding the Mourides, the farmers and the war veterans.

Defender of the equality African and opposing to discrimination, it collaborated with the newspaper the Democracy then founded his own newspaper, Senegal .

Politically, it is quickly supplanted by its " protégé" , Blaise Diagne. He dies in 1941.

Posterity

A college of Dakar bears its name.
