Galaţi

Galaţi ( /ga ' laʦʲ/ ) is a city of the east of the Romania, on the edges of the the Danube, chief town of the Judeţ de Galaţi, very near to Brăila. The population is estimated at 331.360 inhabitants, which places the city at the 7th position of the largest cities of Romania.

Name

The name of the city seems to derive from the Couman galat , borrowed from the Arab qal' At (fortress). Other etymologies were suggested, like that of the Serbe galac , but the root galat also appears in the toponyms of the surroundings, especially in those which clearly have an origin couman, for example Gălăţui Lake , which is couman, (the suffix ui means " eau". This zone was also inhabited by the Celtes in antiquity, and a derivation of Galatia (Gaulle) is close, but improbable.

History

The city developed on the basis of antique Dace position, existing towards the Life or Ve century before J.C. Once the period of war between Romans and Daces, in 101-102 and 105-106 after finished J.C, it will know the influence of Roman civilization, becoming probably dependant on the Romain camp of Barboşi. The new situation Daco-Roman trained on the bed of the Danube, was localized in IIIe century some share in the south of the current place of the Precista church.

The first mention of the city goes back to 1445. In 1789, during the austro-Turkish war, Galaţi is completely burned by the general of the Russian Empire Mikhail Kamensky.

There was a country revolt in the city and the surroundings in 1907, mâtée with the assistance of the Rumanian army.

To see

In Galaţi a pretty orthodoxe cathedral of the 17th century, dedicated to Holy Georges ( Sfântu Gheorghe ), and another strengthened church, dedicated to the Virgin ( Sf. Precista ) on banks of the Danube (a legend says that a tunnel was dug under the river starting from the church). There is also downtown a park with sculptures, a botanical garden, several museums, a tower of television open to the public, which offers a beautiful sight on the city, an opera which has just opened, and a walk of several kilometers along banks of Danude (with great sculptures on both sides of the way).

Teaching

Galaţi has a university, the University of the Low-Danube, founded in 1948 and university since 1974, a teacher training school and other education institutions and cultural, among which the national college Vasile Alecsandri.

Economy

The city has the most important steel-works of Romania, the Mittal Steel Galaţi, which belonged to the state until in 2001. One also calls it by his old name, the Sidex . Moreover, largest shipyard of the country is installed in Galaţi, benefitting from the good access to the Black Sea by the Danube, to a short distance of the steel-works and of its installations.
