Gagaouzie
The Gagaouzie (in Rumanian: Unitate teritorială autonomă Gagauzia , in Gagaouze: Гагауз-Йери , Gagauz-Yeri) is an autonomous region of the République of Moldavie ( autonomous region of Gagaouzie ), located close to the border southern of the Ukraine, and inhabited by the Gagaouzes.
In 1990, the judeţ of Comrat car-proclaimed République of Gagaouzie . The Moldavian Parliament offered to Gagaouzes their autonomy in December 1994.
Population
These Turkish-speaking people , largely Russianized, are ethniquement and culturally distinct from the Moldavians. The population, often mixed with the Bulgarian minority , is of 169 000 inhabitants (82,5% of Gagaouzes). The town of Comrat is the capital of the entity, with nearly 40% of the population of the area (75 000 inhabitants).
