Gabaye country

The " Country Gabaye " , also called " large gavacherie" , is a geographical surface located between the Saintonge at North, the Between-two-Seas in the South and the Angoumois in the East.

The Gabaye Country is composed of the Blayais, the area of Coutras until the Isle, passing very close to Libourne but avoiding the Bourgeais and the Cubzagais.

History

With end of War of One hundred Years (1453) which shows a victory of the armies of the King de France (Bataille of Castillon), the Guyenne is ruined and depopulated by the human losses caused by the engagements between Gascon S and English on a side and French of the other.

The local Gascon lords then make call of miner's hammer of foreign work (Poitou, Angoumois, Saintonge, the Limousin, but also Périgord) to cultivate the grounds left with the abandonment.

The other call of arms come from foreign territories with the Gascogne was consequent with the human losses caused by the Black Death which prevails in the area of 1520 to 1527.

These new occupants were established until Monségur, in the South-east of the Between-two-Seas forming a small island of Langue of oil drowned in the middle of the Occitanie.

They are named by the Gascon S " gavaches" and one calls this core isolated the “gavachery”, the “gavaches” being “foreigners”, surrounded by Gascon S, while the people in border regions of the Gascons in Livornese were named “gabayes”.

By extension, one called " Country gabaye" the zone or one spoke the Dialecte " Gabaye" who is thus mainly an alternative of the Saintongeais imported by these migrant worker.

Gavache

The " term; gavach" would be derived from Spanish " gavacho " meaning " canaille" and always that indicates which comes moreover to North:

in Spain, " los gavachos" , they are the French
in Roussillon, the gavachs are the Languedoc iens
in Languedoc, they are the Auvergnat S
in Gascogne of North (Médoc, or Between-two-Seas for example), the " gavaches" are the neighbors of language of oil, therefore the Charente-native.

The origin of these words or expressions is not always known and several are largely used elsewhere than in the Gabaye Country. " To make chabrot" is for example an expression very known in all South-west. The mitan of the bed is completely French and says… " a little everywhere; Cagouille" , " Drôle" and " drôlesse" also says itself in all the South…
