At the time Roman, Caieta was a holiday resort for many important and rich characters of Rome as well as Formia and of Sperlonga all close relations. These cities were connected by the way Appia.

At the beginning of the the Middle Ages, after the invasion of the Lombards, Gaète under the sovereignty of the Byzantine Empire remained. In the following years, and following the example Amalfi, Sorrente and Naples, it would seem that Gaète was constituted in practically independent port and that it continued a flourishing trade with the Raising. Its history, however, is rather obscure until worms 830, date on which the city becomes a seigniory dominated by hypati, or Consul S: the first of them was Constantin (839 - 866) then Marin and Docibile Ier (867 - 906). Largest was Jean Ier (906 - 933) who crushed the Sarrasins with the Garigliano in 915, gaining the honor of patricius of the emperor Constantin VII of Byzance. At the 11th century, the duchy falls between the hands from the counts Normands from Aversa, become princes of Capoue, and Gaète is definitively attached to their kingdom by Roger of Sicily in 1135. The city continues however to beat its own currency until in 1229.

The city played a remarkable part in the military history of the peninsula: its fortifications go back to the Roman period, and a mausoleum of the Ier century of the Roman general Lucius Munatius Plancus is located on the close Montagna Spaccata . These fortifications were prolonged and reinforced at the 15th century and during all the history of the Royaume of Naples (become Royaume of Deux-Siciles). The September 30th 1707, those were destroyed after a three month old seat by the Autrichiens of Count de Daun. The August 6th 1734, the city was taken after new a four month old seat by the French, Spanish troops and Sardinians under the command of the future king Charles VII of Naples.
