Funchal is the chief town of the island of Madeira and an autonomous region of the Portugal gathering the islands of the archipelago. Port of call located on the southern part by 32° 37 ' 45" of northern Latitude, and 16° 55 ' 20" of Longitude western, it is also the only big city of the island. Surface of the east city 76,25 km ², and it counts 103.962 inhabitants (2001). It is administratively divided into 10 communes.

It has the university, most recent of Portugal.

Funchal comes from the word funcho which means Fenouil in Portuguese. Indeed, when first Portuguese discovered the Madeira to XVe century, it abundantly pushed there fennel with the site of the current one.
