Friends of Nature

The organization of the Amis of Nature was founded in 1895 with Vienna. At that time, marked by the advent of tourism, the Friends of Nature succeeded in proposing with broad layers of the population of the activities of leisures and tourism close relations of nature. Initiation and sensitizing with the beauties of nature, just like information on those and the culture, counted as of the beginning among the main objectives of the organization. Parallel to progress of the modern industrial society and commercial tourism, they engaged professionally in protection of nature and of the environment and provided a major, theoretical and practical contribution, with the development of alternative and ecological tourist formulas.

Goals

The activities of the Friends of Nature are based on the idea that protection of nature is indissociable safeguarding of the chances of each one to open out oneself. They is for this reason that the Friends of Nature have since their creation works for safeguarding of the environment and the mediums of life, for the peace and the bringing together of the people, for the social rights and democratic of all the human beings, just like for enriching practices of leisures. Forts of their tradition centenary, the Friends of Nature engage now for the implementation of sustainable development, and especially for transborder formulas of environmental protection, like for tourism socially responsible and respectful of the environment.

Engagement for sustainable development

Through the “Landscapes of the year”, proclaimed every two years, the Friends of Nature created a model for the implementation of the objective of durable regional development. By international projects, like the campaigns “100  000 trees for Europe” or “Of the blue rivers for Europe”, they propose to develop a greater sensitivity for the environmental problems and to motivate the members to be engaged actively. In 1995 the Friends of Nature created the Institut for intégratif tourism (IITF), with an aim of sensitizing research and the formation as regards tourism with the principles of sustainable development. The Proclamation for new Europe (1993) and the Proclamation for an ecological, social and peaceful future (1996), the proposals submitted to the intergovernmental Conference of the European Union, just like the green Livre relating to the Alps are as many examples illustrating the Lobbying than the Friends of Nature practice with the international scales.

An international movement

With 600  000 members in approximately 3500 groupings, with 39 professional secretariats and approximately 35  000 voluntary collaborators, the Friends of Nature count universally among the largest non-governmental organizations with nonlucrative goal. They propose with their members seminars and information memoranda, as well as activities of leisures and tourist, respectful of the environment. They manage more than 1000 houses of Friends of Nature in Europe and Outre-Mer. The International of the Friends of Nature (IAN), whose seat is in Vienna, is the organization of supervision of the national federations.
