Friedrich Schmidt

Friedrich Schmidt (January 15th 1832 - 1908) is a Estonian Géologue .

He studies botany with the Université of Tartu. From 1856 to 1859 he works as assistant of the director of the botanical garden of Tartu. During its botanical excursions it collects and publishes its observations on the rocks of the Ordovicien in Estonia as well as a chart detailed of the area. From 1859 to 1962 it takes share with Russian colleagues with several forwardings to study the fauna, the Flore and the Géologie of the north of the Siberia.

It moves with Saint Petersbourg or it publishes articles on the glacial deposits of Estonia and on fish of the Silurien. In 1866-1867 it leads a forwarding in Siberia which discovers the first Mammouth with preserved soft parts.

After a stay in Germany to look after itself of a disease contracted during its last forwarding it turns over to Saint Petersbourg in autumn 1870. Schmidt becomes member of the Academy of Science of Russia in 1872 and a later directing year of the museum of mineralogy of Petersbourg Saint. Until the end of its life it is interested particularly in the Trilobite S and a collection gathers some, it particularly sticks to use its Fossile S to solve stratigraphic problems and publishes several articles in this direction.

Schmidt travels, Sweden, Germany, the United States, Canada, it takes part in all the international congresses of geology between 1884 and 1891 and organizes that which takes place with Saint Petersbourg in 1897. It receives the Médaille Wollaston in 1890.
