Freguesia

Freguesia (in French Parish ) is the name given to the Portugal with smallest the administrative Division of the territory. Each freguesia has of a council of parish ( assembleia of freguesia ) and a committee of parish ( junta of freguesia ). There exist 4257 freguesias in Portugal which are then gathered in 308 concelhos , also called municípios (situation 2005).

The designation of freguesia is also used in the countries colonized by Portuguese. Thus Macao has 7 freguesias . With the Brazil, one still uses the designation of freguesia for old districts of certain cities. The Cape Verde has an administrative division of 17 concelhos subdivided in 31 freguesias.

The recognition like freguesia of a grouping of population, now obsolete, marked in the past the first stage of the growth of an agglomeration.
