François Villeroy de Galhau

François Villeroy de Galhau , born in 1959, French high-civil servant since end of the year 80, realizes since 2003 an incursion into the private one. Tax inspector, it in particular was to advise budgetary of Pierre Bérégovoy when this one was Prime Minister (1990-1993), then permanent representative of the France to COREPER. Under the government of Lionel Jospin, he was principal private secretary of Dominique Strauss-Kahn (1997-1999) then of Christian Sautter (1999-2000) with the ministry for the Economy and Finances. He is finally managing director of the taxes of 2000 to 2003.

In 2003 François Villeroy de Galhau, becomes general president-director of Cetelem, credit loan society to consumption.

Need for commercial image? policy? or more simply maturity of the man, François Villeroy since 2003 is médiatisé more, intervening regularly in the press, with the radio even on television: under owner of Cetelem but also to personal capacity, on the defense of a reform of the taxation or of a bringing together enters UDF and the Socialist party (François Villeroy belongs to the Gracques during the presidential campaign of 2007).

He is also active member of the social Semaines of France, at the sides of Michel Camdessus, Jean-Baptiste de Foucauld, Jean Boissonnat and other personalities of the financial world and economy worried by the social action of the Catholic church and the place of the Christians in the current society. He is the author of the work Développement of the financial activities taking into consideration ethical requirement of Christianity (ED. Vaticane bookstore, 1994). François Villeroy seems close to French the Jesuits mediums.

He teaches or taught with Sciences Po (Paris) (attested for the school year 2004-2005). François Villeroy is also:

  • member of the board of directors of the Foundation of France (2007)
  • member of the board of directors of association the historical residence (2007)
  • member of the council of orientation of IN Real-time , association for the debate and research
  • member of the board of trustees of Bayard Presses (owner group of the Cross where it publishes many articles) (2005)
  • member of the Council of orientation of the Funds of social cohesion

Social ethics

The ethical reflection seems in the middle of its political action and social. Its reflections on finance in comparison with Christian ethics form in 1994 an unequalled reflection hitherto. For as much, its reflection seems to start from two more or less clarified postulates which pose problem. Its first postulate is that the financial activity is only one tool and that it is thus alone its use which makes the moral value of it. Its second postulate is that the economic growth is good: it allows employment and the material development, and perhaps, can one hope for, spiritual men. These two postulates are however debatable. Ivan Illich for example, showed that certain tools are always destroying, between some hands which they are. The destroying tool increases the standardization, the exploitation and the impotence; it conceals with poor its share of user-friendliness for better frustrating the rich person of his . Lastly, François Villeroy, familiar of the press and the catholic mediums where this subject is regularly evoked, cannot be unaware of the questioning of the concept of growth, as ecologically harmful in a world which consumes already well too much (see the bearable article Décroissance).
