François Valley

François Vallée (Plounévez-Moëdec 1860 - Rennes 1949) was a linguist specialist in the Breton language.

Life and work

He is professor with the college of Saint-Brieuc and has as raises François Jaffrenou.

He takes part in August 1898, with Morlaix, following Breton festivals, with the creation of the Breton regionalistic Union, located under the presidency of Anatole Braz. He was named president of the section of Breton language and literature with François Taldir-Jaffrenou as secretary.

In 1908, with the linguist Emile Ernault, they create the Entente of the Breton writers which proposed a common orthography starting from the writing of Leon as improved by Gonidec. The majority of the writers agree on a standard (which will be later called évêchés KLT in reference to the three that it relates to: Cornwall, Leon, Trégor). The agreement which could not have been concluded with the writers vannetais, the large majority of the latter continued to transcribe their texts with the old C-W communication vannetaise.

He was the principal instigator with Meven Mordiern of the movement of massive creation of Néologisme S starting from Breton roots, thinking that the monolinguals of Breton language of their time would thus have a more direct access to knowledge.

Its most important work is the Grand French-Breton dictionary , helped of Rene the Russet-red (Meven Mordiern) and Emile Ernault, in 1931. The company of François Vallée, who has a whole network of advisers through Brittany, will make it possible to collect in the very important dialects a number of words and expressions news. The goal of the work was also to give the means of approaching all the fields into Breton, from where the incorporation of many neologisms: some, nowadays, found their place in the language, others were abandoned. This dictionary is the first example of a team work in Breton lexicography, and remains, most important to date and the richest French-Breton dictionary, with that of Rene Gléau.

He is the director of the weekly magazine rear Kroaz Vretoned . This weekly newspaper of Christian inspiration was published until the end of the First World War. He is member of the Gorsedd of Brittany, Secrétaire of the Breton Académie.
